We are very proud to share that dr. Sarah Giest has been appointed as full professor of Public Policy with a focus on innovation and sustainability at Leiden University - Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs. Liesbet van Zoonen honored as Leiden-Delft-Erasmus professor |
We are very happy to announce that our scientific director Liesbet van Zoonen has been honored as Leiden-Delft-Erasmus professor, during our conference in June. Promotion Anne van Eldik |
On October 19th the promotion ceremony of Anne van Eldik took place. Anne is one of the PhD-candidates affiliated with our centre. Her research focuses on urban media engagement by looking at how young people construct an urban identity from their creative media use. Read more about her research.. Congratulations, Anne! |

New run 'Smart and SHARED Cities' minor |
In September, the BOLD Cities minor 'Smart and SHARED Cities' started its fourth run. In the coming months, a group of very enthusiastic students will explore the opportunities and challenges for (smart) cities in a total of five modules taught by a group of very interesting teachers. Read more.. |

The Centre for BOLD Cities is happy to welcome two new teachers to the teaching staff of the Smart and SHARED Cities minor. Dr. Freek de Haan took over part of module 1, in which students get to know more about the concepts surrounding smart cities. Dr. Tomasz Jaskiewicz took over module 2, during which the students got to enjoy multiple fieldtrips and learn more about smart applications in cities. |

New LDE-trainee: Sarah |
Sarah van der Zeijden is the new trainee at the LDE Centre for BOLD Cities. During this academic year, she will be involved in the organization of the outreach activities from BOLD Cities and function as the secretary to the BOLD Cities board. Sarah replaced Esther Eumann, who worked as a trainee at BOLD last year. Read more about Sarah and Esther. |

New researcher: Suyoung Kim |
Prof. dr. Suyoung Kim joined our centre in September as a visiting fellow. Kim is an associate professor at the Department of Social Welfare at Seoul National University. While at the Centre for BOLD Cities, she hopes to broaden her academic boundary to European societies and share her South Korean research cases on how digitalized work, administration and community change the time-space interactions of people and society. New intern: Manuela |
Manuela Puddu is a master’s student in Social Innovation and Communication at the University of Cagliari, Italy. In September and October, Manuela assisted in the Smart and SHARED Cities minor, developing interactive teaching materials and sharing videos regarding smart city topics. Read more.. |

New student assistant: Leo |
Leo is a master student Politics and Society at ESSB. For the coming months, he will be making sure everything runs smoothly in the BOLD Cities minor programme 'Smart and SHARED Cities'. Data-driven working in municipalities |
In the past months, our PhD Candidate Margot Kersing explored how unemployed benefit recipients experience data-driven working of their municipality. The primary findings of this research have been published in a booklet. Read more about the publication. |

New dashboard on education segregation |
A research project from Marjolijn Das, one of our endowed professors, has made a new statistic dashboard possible about education segregation in the Netherlands. One of the conclusions based on the data in this dashboard is that the level of education segregation is the highest in cities. Read more.. |

Leiden-Delft-Erasmus publishes interviews from our 'Smart Cities' White Paper |
Last summer, we published our white paper, “Dit is de échte slimme stad”, in which 17 academics and practitioners start the conversation we as a society urgently need to have about the role of data and tech in the city. Every month, one of the interviews from the white paper is published on the website of the LDE collaboration. This month, Jiska Engelbert (ESSB/BOLD Cities) and Henk Bouwmans (Dutch Association for Councilmembers) discuss the role of the city council when it comes to smart cities. Read more.. |
